Jonathan Kiessling studied law at the University of Bayreuth with a specialisation in “Human Rights: History, Contexts, Universalisation” and stayed at the University of Tartu (Estonia) during his participation in the EU’s Erasmus program. In 2021, he joined the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) as a Research Associate at the former Chair for Public Law, Migration Law and Human Rights of Anuscheh Farahat. As a PhD candidate at FAU, he is currently working on his thesis, povisionally titled “Proceduralisation and Substantialisation in Pushback Cases – the prohibition of collective expulsion under Art. 4 Protocol 4 ECHR and its relationship to human-rights-based Non-Refoulement”. In 2023, he spent a research stay at the Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law and was awarded a scholarship by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (“Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes”) for his research. Since 2024, Jonathan is a Research Associate at the FAU Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nuremberg (CHREN) and the Coordintator of the CHREN Human Rights Clinic.
